The Colorado Rockies could be without the services of 2nd baseman Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers dove for a fly ball during the Rockies’ 6-4 Cactus League loss to the Rangers. He dislocated his left shoulder. A timetable for his return is unknown.
Rodgers is entering his 5th year for the Rockies. Last season was his first as the everyday 2nd baseman. At the plate, Rodgers’ batting average ended at .266. He drove in 63 RBI’s and had 13 home runs. The best part of his offensive numbers was doubles. Rodgers was able to drive the ball into the gap for a career-high 30 doubles.
Offensively, his numbers were not bad, helping the Rockies last year. Rodgers committed 10 errors at 2nd base. This was good enough for him to win his first Gold Glove.
The Rockies were expecting him to even have better numbers. He was going to be the everyday 2nd baseman. Unfortunately, this injury could keep him out for the start of the season. According to Denverpost.com, Rockies’ Manager Bud Black said, “We’ll likely know more what (Rodger’s) status is in the coming day. The degree of trauma in the joint will determine how long he’s out. Hopefully, the trauma to the shoulder capsule is not too bad and he’s only out a few weeks.”
The best case is Rodgers is out most of Spring Training. At least he would be in the lineup once the regular season begins on March 30th when the Rockies travel to San Diego to take on the Padres. If not, Rodgers could miss some of the season. The Rockies’ backup 2nd baseman is Alan Trejo.
Trejo is not as experienced as Rodgers. He has played 2nd base at the Major League level for a total of 13 games not a lot but at least he can step in for Rodgers. Hopefully, the injury to Rodgers isn’t long-term. If it is, the infield for the Rockies won’t be as strong with him out of the lineup.
