Colorado Rockies Shortstop Jose Reyes Suspension Looming

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been on paid leave due to his offseason domestic violence arrest. Reyes was involved in an incident that, according to CBSsports.com, left Reyes’ wife, Katherine, with noticeable bodily injuries. Reyes is expected to be suspended at least 60 games. It could be as high as 80 games. What should the Colorado Rockies do with Jose Reyes?

Reyes was traded to the Colorado Rockies from the Toronto Blue Jays for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on July 28th, 2015. Last season, Reyes appeared in 47 games for the Rockies hitting .259 with 3 home runs and 19 RBI’s. Not bad numbers for him in a short amount of time.

Reyes was arrested during the offseason for an alleged domestic violence incident. Charges were eventually dropped because his wife wasn’t cooperating with the investigation. MLB decided to look into it and he was placed on administrative leave. Now he could be suspended for his actions.

This may not be the worst news for the Rockies. Reyes is owed $22 million this season. If MLB suspends him for almost half the year, he would only get paid $11 million, saving the Rockies some money.   Reyes may not have a job once he is done serving it. Trevor Story has shown this year he can be the everyday shortstop. He rarely misses a ground ball and throws quickly and accurately to first to get the base runner out.   Story is also doing it with the bat, hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI’s.

The Colorado Rockies could try to trade Reyes when he comes back. The one issue might be his salary. He is owed $22 million the next two seasons. The other option for the Rockies is to cut him. They would still need to pay his salary unless another team signs him.

The Rockies could also keep him on the team. Reyes hasn’t played since the season ended last year. Who knows what kind of baseball shape he is in. Reyes would need to prove to the Rockies that he is ready to go.  Reyes isn’t a bad shortstop and could back up Trevor Story. He might become a veteran leader and mentor for the young players from the bench or on the playing field.  The Rockies will have a big decision on what they should do with Jose Reyes.
