Colorado Rockies Stand Pat At The Trade Deadline, Rocktober Coming?

By Jordan Long

The Major League Baseball trade deadline came and went yesterday at 2 PM Mountain Time. Last month, the Colorado Rockies were thinking they were going to be sellers at the trade deadline. Teams were calling them for outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Blackmon as well as reliever Boone Logan. The Rockies decided not to make a move. Why didn’t they?

The Rockies have won 12 out of 17 games since the All-Star Break. They currently sit 4.5 games back of Miami for the second Wild Card spot. The Rockies believe that they can make the playoffs.

The Rockies’ pitching has improved since the break. The team has an ERA of 3.26, 7th best in MLB. The pitchers are not leaving pitches up in the zone for easy home runs and have only given up 8 home runs in the second half of the season. The only other team who has given up less is the Brewers with 6. The Rockies starting pitching is why they are staying in games.

The Rockies are batting .247 with 18 home runs. That kind of offense with the mix of the pitching will keep them in games. Colorado is looking strong to make a playoff push.

The Rockies have all the makings of a playoff team. They have quality starting pitching, play solid defense, and their offense is stepping up. The Rockies felt this team is good enough to get them to the playoffs and making a trade wasn’t necessary.

This is still the Colorado Rockies. It is a decent start to the second half but it’s August. Colorado has a tough schedule coming up. They start a three game set tonight against the Dodgers who are only two back of the San Francisco Giants for the NL West lead. It seems the Dodgers always have the Rockies’ number and sweep them or win two out of three. Once they finish that series, the Miami Marlins head to town.  On August 15 the Washington Nationals, who are first in the National League East, will visit Coors field. Then their toughest opponent, the Chicago Cubs, who have the best record in baseball, travel to the Mile High City. These series will make or break the Rockies season. If they can sweep or win two out three, they will be sitting in a great position to make the playoffs. Time will only tell. If they fail to do so, it might be because they didn’t make a move at the trade deadline for another pitcher or batter in the lineup.

What do you think of the Colorado Rockies not making any moves at the trade deadline?
