The Dallas Cowboys could be interested in quarterback Nick Foles as a backup. They lost Kellen Moore to a broken left leg yesterday. Moore had been the backup to Tony Romo last year.
Nick Foles is available after he was bought out of his contract from the Los Angeles Rams last week, making him an unrestricted free agent. Foles has been in the NFL for 4 years and knows how to play the position. That experience would help the Cowboys if Romo gets hurt again. Romo hasn’t played a full 16 game regular season since 2012. Last year he was out for 12 games with a broken collarbone.
The only problem might be Foles’ price. Foles has been a starting quarterback in the league and could ask for $10 to $15 million this year, a lot of money to spend on a backup quarterback.
If the Cowboys decide not to pursue Nick Foles, they have a few options. Dallas could go with the remaining quarterbacks on the roster as a backup, Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers. The problem with both of them is that they don’t have NFL playing experience. Dak Prescott is a rookie who Dallas drafted in the fourth-round of this year’s NFL Draft. Jameill Showers was on the roster last year, but only on the practice squad.
The Cowboys might look to trade for backup quarterback. They could trade for the Cleveland Brown’s Josh McCown or Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Mike Glennon. Josh McCown has more NFL experience than Mike Glennon. McCown played in 77 NFL games, throwing for 13,142 yards and 73 touchdowns but has thrown 63 interceptions. Glennon, on the other hand, has only seen action in 19 NFL games. Either way the Cowboys would have a quarterback who has seen action in NFL games if they decide to trade for one of them.
I think the best option for them right now is to see what happens in the preseason. Coaches haven’t seen Dak Prescott in a game, so they only see what he has done in practice. He may show that he can handle the duties of a backup quarterback. Jameill Showers had some playing time in last year’s preseason. They know what he can do, but the coaching staff should see how he has improved. If both of them struggle, then think of signing Nick Foles or trading for a quarterback.
Who should be the backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys?
