The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent quarterback Nick Foles. His contract is a base salary of $1.75 million but could be worth more because of incentives. It also includes a team option for 2017 which could be between $6.5 and $16 million depending on how he plays this season.
This a respectable deal for the Chiefs. Foles is a decent quarterback in this league and they aren’t paying him a lot this season. This also reunites him with Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid. Foles was on the Eagles’ roster when Reid was the head coach in 2012. Reid knows what he can do on the football field.
Foles will have to earn a spot as a backup quarterback. He needs to beat out Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray. Foles is the most seasoned backup. Foles has played in a total of 39 games throwing for 8,805 yards, 53 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions. Aaron Murray is in his third year while Bray is in his 4th year in the NFL. Neither one has played meaningful snaps in an NFL game.
I don’t agree with Foles’ decision to head to Kansas City. He may not see the field at all this season and that would be a waste. The Chief’s starting quarterback, Alex Smith, hasn’t missed a single game since joining the Chiefs in 2012. Foles should have gone to the Dallas Cowboys. They may have offered him the same type of deal. Tony Romo hasn’t played a full NFL year since 2012. He could have seen playing time in a games this season.
Another team that I was surprised who didn’t take a chance on him was the Denver Broncos. The Broncos have one veteran quarterback on the team, Mark Sanchez. Trevor Siemian is in his second year while Paxton Lynch is a rookie. Foles would have added to the quarterback competition and, who knows, he might have been the starter this year.
Foles may be making the right decision for himself. He should be able to earn the backup role with the Kansas City Chiefs. He must play well in the preseason. Those games will determine if Foles makes the roster.
What do you think of Nick Foles agreeing to a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs?
