Denver Broncos’ First Preseason Game, What to Expect?

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos’ first preseason game is tonight from Chicago. Kickoff is at 6 PM Mountain Time. What should fans look for in this game?

The quarterback competition heats up. Mark Sanchez will be the starter to play the first quarter. Trevor Siemian should be in the entire second quarter. Paxton Lynch has his opportunity to show what he can do in the second half. This will be the first step to making an impression on the coaching staff. Sanchez can’t turn the ball over like he has in practice. If he does and Siemian performs well, Siemian could be listed higher on the depth chart. For Lynch this will be his first chance to show what he can do on the field.

The third wide receiver position is wide open. Bennie Fowler, Cody Latimer, and Jordan Norwood are vying for that spot. They must perform well tonight. I have to think that Fowler has the first crack at it. If Latimer and Norwood out perform Fowler, they might receive more repetitions in practice.

The running game needs to stand out tonight. The Kubiak offense is all about the run to establish the passing game. If the Broncos can get the running game going, they will be able to open up the pass.

I am looking forward to seeing what running back Kapri Bibbs can do. He had some decent games in preseason last year but didn’t make the starting roster. Bibs was on the practice squad. He played well in practice but needs a strong game to show how much he has improved since last year.

The biggest competition to watch for tonight is the punt and kick return specialist. I know Norwood can handle those duties and he showed that last year. He rarely drops the ball on punts. Kalif Raymond has his chance tonight.   This might be the only way for him to make the team. Time will tell on this one.

Once this game is over the coaching staff reviews the tape. They see the areas they can improve on. Then a new depth chart will be created. The backups and the players trying to make his team must make an impression.

What are you looking forward to in this preseason game?
