Denver Broncos’ Looming Decision On Quarterback Mark Sanchez

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos officially announced that Trevor Siemian will be their starting quarterback. The Broncos now have a decision to make on what to do with Mark Sanchez. They acquired Mark Sanchez on March 11th for a 7th-round draft pick. Denver was hoping he could be the veteran quarterback leader on this team. Now that Sanchez won’t be the starter, what are Denver’s options?

The Broncos could cut Mark Sanchez. He is owed $4.5 million this year. The problem with cutting him is the salary. The Broncos would have to take a cap hit of $4.5 million which might affect them going after players if they need to replace any injured players or sign a backup quarterback.

I don’t like the option for the Broncos of cutting Sanchez. I know he didn’t perform in preseason games but Sanchez can be a backup. If the Broncos cut him then they are down to two quarterbacks on the roster, Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian. If one of them goes down in a game and has to be out for a length of time, then the Broncos would be forced to sign another quarterback.

Denver could trade Mark Sanchez. The Broncos are willing to trade him and even put Sanchez on the trading block. The Dallas Cowboys might be interested since Tony Romo is out to start the season. They could use a veteran backup quarterback to rookie Dak Prescott. The Broncos would at least get something in return for Sanchez.

The Broncos want a middle to late draft pick. The difficulty is, does Dallas really want to trade for Sanchez? I don’t like this choice because it leaves Denver with two quarterbacks on the roster. On the other hand, they receive a draft pick in next years’ NFL Draft.

The last option for Denver is to renegotiate Sanchez’s current deal. If the Broncos feel that they want to keep Sanchez, this is their best choice. This allows the Broncos to have three quarterbacks on the roster.

The problem I see with this is I don’t think Sanchez would want to renegotiate his current deal. It would force him to take less money which he may not want to do. Sanchez is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the year and might want as much money as he can get.

The Broncos are going to need to make the tough decision by September 3rd. This is when all NFL teams have to be down to 53 players prior to 2 P.M. Mountain Time. We will wait and see what the Broncos want to do with Mark Sanchez.

What do you think the Broncos should do with Mark Sanchez?
