The Minnesota Vikings haven’t announced a starter for Sunday’s game when they hit the road to face the Tennessee Titans. The Vikings were hoping Teddy Bridgewater would get the nod the whole season but he is out with a torn ACL. The Vikings have Shaun Hill on the roster and also traded for Sam Bradford. Who should start for the Vikings?
Sam Bradford is in his 6th NFL season and the Vikings mark his third team. He previously suited up for the St. Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles. Bradford appeared in 63 NFL games throwing for 14,790 yards and 78 touchdowns. In those games his record is 25-37-1. He has thrown 52 interceptions but his biggest problem is holding on to the football. Bradford doesn’t have pocket awareness. When the pocket breaks down, instead of throwing the football away or running for yardage, he gets hit by the opposing teams which has led to 24 fumbles.
The difficulty with starting Bradford this week is how much of the playbook does he know? He was traded from the Eagles to the Vikings earlier this week. The plays are not the problem, but the terminology that Head Coach Mike Zimmer uses. The Vikings don’t want him out there if he doesn’t understand the play call.
Shaun Hill is the better option. Hill has been in the NFL for 10 years with four different teams, the Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, and St. Louis Rams. Hill played in 46 games and tossed for 8,053 yards and 49 touchdowns. His career record is 16-18. Hill holds on to the ball better than Bradford with only 15 fumbles.
I think Zimmer should start Shaun Hill. This is his second year in the system and he understands the language of the plays. Hill will get them in the right formation for the play. Once this week is over, let Bradford start next week because he is the better quarterback of the two. Sitting him allows Bradford to learn the system. Head Coach Mike Zimmer is expected to announce on Sunday who starts.
Who you think should start for the Vikings in week 1?
