Getting To Know Patriots Third String Quarterback Jacoby Brissett

By Jordan Long

The New England Patriots are down to their third quarterback on the depth chart. Because of his suspension, Tom Brady isn’t coming back until week five when the Patriots face the Cleveland Browns . Jimmy Garoppolo, starting in place of Brady, suffered a sprain in the AC joint on Sunday. It occurred when Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso landed on his right throwing shoulder with 4 minutes and 20 seconds left in the second quarter. The Patriots were forced to play the rest of the game with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. According to cbssports.com, Garoppolo could miss up to six weeks. Brissett will be the starting quarterback for the next two weeks if Garoppolo can’t suit up. Who is Jacoby Brissett?

Brissett was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in this years’ NFL Draft.   He played his college football at the University of Florida and N.C. State. Brissett started his college career in Florida. 2011 and 2012 he was in a Gator uniform. He threw for 455 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions in 13 games.

Prior to the 2013 college football season, Brissett decided to transfer to North Carolina State University (N.C. State) Wolfpack. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he had to sit out the whole 2013 season. In 2014 Brissett was named the starter, appearing all 13 games for the Wolfpack. That year he threw for 2,606 yards, 23 touchdowns, and he was careful with the football with 5 interceptions.

His senior season, 2015, Brissett once again played in all 13 games. He had a total of 2,662 passing yards and 20 touchdowns with 6 interceptions. Those college numbers were respectable and the Patriots drafted him.

Brissett had his first taste of the NFL during the Patriots’ win over the Dolphins. He was 6 of 9 for 92 yards and didn’t throw an interception or a touchdown but was sacked two times. The Patriots were conservative with their play calling since they held a 24-3 lead when he entered the game. They went on to a 31-24 victory.

I don’t know what kind of quarterback Brissett is since the Patriots didn’t really let him throw the football on Sunday. That might have to do with the big lead and how much of the playbook he really knows. The Patriots will have a better understanding if Brissett starts on Thursday night against the Houston Texans. I hope Brissett shows that he can be the replacement until Tom Brady finishes his suspension. If he performs poorly, they will need to sign a free agent quarterback for a few weeks. Time will only tell.

What do you think of Jacoby Brissett as the replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo?
