The Baltimore Ravens lost 16-10 to the Washington Redskins on Sunday, dropping their record to 3-2. On Monday they decided to fire Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman and replaced him with Quarterback’s Coach Marty Mornhinweg. Why would they make this move?
The Baltimore Ravens were able to move the ball at times against Washington. They had 306 total yards. The Ravens running game was able to gain 118 yards on the ground but could never get the passing game going with only 188 yards through the air. The red zone hurt them. They made three trips only to come away with one touchdown and one field goal.
On the season the offense has played poorly ranking 23rd in points scored and total yards per game. The Ravens put up 18.8 points per game and 338.3 yards per game. Through the air they average 239.2 yards per game. The running game has been average with 99 yards per game. That is on Trestman. His play calling has been horrible.
What is not on Trestman is the offensive line. The offensive line has allowed 11 sacks so far this season. It is not his job to protect the quarterback or have the line create holes for the running backs. The offensive line coach is the one who needed to assist Trestman.
The Ravens are overreacting. Most teams would take a 3-2 start. They are only a half game behind Pittsburgh for the AFC North lead. The Ravens must feel that Trestman is the reason why they are not winning football games on offense and a switch was needed. I have to wonder, though, if the offense continues to struggle under Marty Mornhinweg would they fire him? I would think so, but a change could ignite the offense.
What do you think of the Baltimore Ravens replacing Offensive Coordinators 5 games into the season?
