On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions added depth to their running back position, signing Justin Forsett. The Baltimore Ravens released Forsett on October 4th after both sides agreed to mutually part ways. Forsett suited up in three games this season running for 98 yards for the Ravens. How will this move assist the Lions?
The Lions wanted running back help. Starter Ameer Abdullah was put on injured reserve due to a foot injury and rookie Dwayne Washington is dealing with an ankle injury. That left only Theo Riddick and Zach Zenner as the only running backs on the Lions’ roster.
Reddick has been called upon to be the starting running back while Ameer Abdullah is out. He has been doing an average job. In 5 games Riddick ran for 171 yards on 50 carries, an unimpressive average of 3.4 yards per rush. He added 190 yards receiving. Zach Zenner is in his second year and hasn’t seen a whole lot of playing time, rushing for only 21 yards. The Lions badly needed another running back since Riddick and Zenner weren’t getting the job done.
I like the addition of Justin Forsett to help the Lions’ backfield. His season was poor to this point but he is a veteran. Forsett knows how to run in this league. He is in his 8th year and has rushed for 3,697 yards. His quickness allows him to break tackles for first downs or longer gains. This is a decent addition to the Lions.
The only downside of this deal is the Lions’ offensive line. They haven’t created holes for the running backs to run the football. They average 89.8 yards on the ground per game. The Lions’ running game should improve with Justin Forsett but it will be up to the Lions’ to block for him. I hope with Justin Forsett in the backfield, their running game will get going. He can advance the Lions running game.
What do you think of the Lions adding Justin Forsett to their roster
