Fixing The Denver Broncos’ Running Game Woes

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos’ running game has been poor so far this season averaging 98.5 yards per game which is 19th in the league. The Broncos are hoping to get the running game going against the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. The Texans rank 29th in the NFL, giving up 126.3 rushing yards per game. What has been the problem with the Broncos’ ground game?

The Broncos try every game to open up the passing game by running the football. The biggest setback with the running game is the offensive line. They are getting beat, up front, which hasn’t created a lane for any of the running backs to run the football. It is not all on the offensive line.

When plays have been called to run outside, C.J. Anderson hasn’t made the cut and the defense tackles him for losses. Anderson has rushed for 330 yards on 94 carries for an average per rush of 3.5. That is not getting the job done. It is time to split the carries between Devontea Booker and C.J. Anderson.

According to the Denverpost.com, Head Coach Gary Kibiak wants to give Denontea Booker playing time saying, “When he’s had some opportunities, he’s done some really good things. As a young player, we’re trying to get him going as far as (pass) protection and those types of things. He’s starting to handle himself better. I think he deserves some more opportunities to touch the football.”

Booker should see more time on the field. He can pass block just like C.J. Anderson, but he is the change-of-pace back. Booker is a different runner than Anderson because he can run through the holes faster. He has shown flashes of what he can do running for 161 yards and an impressive 4.7 yards per rush.

It is time for the Broncos to see what they have in Booker. He must run the football more. The Broncos should still have Anderson start the game but trade him out so Booker can see the field.   If the Broncos are able to run the football, that will tire out the opponents’ defense which could equal big gains for touchdowns or long yardage. Those could be the difference in winning the football game.
