North American Sports Title Droughts

By Jordan Long

The Chicago Cubs ended the longest championship drought in North American sports history.   They won the World Series on Wednesday in game 7, defeating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in ten innings. It was their first championship in 108 years. Other teams have been waiting a long time to celebrate.

In the NFL the Detroit Lions’ last NFL title was in 1957 before the Super Bowl era. The Lions have one playoff win which was in 1991 when they knocked off the Dallas Cowboys 38-6 in the Divisional Round. The Philadelphia Eagles appeared in the Super Bowl twice. Their last title came in 1960. The Minnesota Vikings have been an NFL team since 1961 and went to four Super Bowls, losing all them.

The NHL teams ultimate goal is to win the Stanley Cup. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues both haven’t won the Cup in 48 years. The Maple Leafs last hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1967 while the Blues have yet to touch the Cup. The Vancouver Canucks made the Stanley Cup Final three times in their history, which dates back to 1970, but could never win the series.

The NBA has many teams searching for an NBA title. The Sacramento Kings have waited 66 years for a championship team. The Atlanta Hawks were champions back in 1958 when they were the St. Louis Hawks. They are still waiting for a championship as the Atlanta Hawks. They haven’t played in the NBA Finals since they have been in Atlanta. The Denver Nuggets didn’t join the NBA until 1977 and have yet to make the NBA Finals let alone win one.

With the Cubs winning the World Series this year, the Cleveland Indians now hold Major League Baseball’s longest title drought. They haven’t won since 1948, marking 68 years. Right behind them are the Texas Rangers who started play in 1961 as the Washington Senators 55 years ago. They made back-to-back trips to the World Series in 2010 and 2011 only to lose it.

These are just a few of the teams still waiting to celebrate a championship. Hopefully, they won’t have to wait 108 years for that to occur.

What drought in North American sports history will be the next to fall?
