John Lynch, A Surprise Hire For The San Francisco 49ers As General Manager

By Jordan Long

The San Francisco 49ers hired their new General Manager. It is John Lynch, a former NFL player. Lynch has no experience in the front office with an NFL team. His deal will be for six years.

Lynch had a successful NFL career playing in the NFL for 15 years. He suited up for two teams, the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Once he hung up his cleats, it was up to the booth. Lynch had been a broadcaster for NFL on Fox since 2008.

The 49ers had been looking for a General Manager since January 1st after they fired Trent Baalke. Baalke was the General Manager for San Francisco the past five years. He had two years left on his deal.

Owner Jed York narrowed his search down to three this weekend, John Lynch, Minnesota Vikings Assistant General Manager George Paton, and Arizona Cardinals Vice President of Player Personnel Terry McDonough. York decided to give the job to John Lynch.

This is a surprise move. Lynch doesn’t have the knowledge of putting together a team or personnel moves. He knows football. The 49ers should have hired a person who has more practice in the front office. George Paton would have been the better choice. Paton worked in the front office for the Minnesota Vikings the last ten years. According to Vikings.com, before being in the front office for the Vikings, Paton served as the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel with the Chicago Bears in 2000. From 2001 to 2006 Paton was with the Miami Dolphins as Director of Personnel. That is 16 years of NFL front office expertise.

The 49ers must be patient with Lynch. He will be learning on the job. Hopefully, in the end, it will work out for them. Right now it seems like they hired the wrong guy.
