Chicago Blackhawks Dismiss Assistant Coach Mike Kitchen

By Jordan Long

The Chicago Blackhawks were swept in 4 games in the first-round of the NHL playoffs against the Nashville Predators. Chicago struggled to score goals in the series with a total of 3 including being shutout in games 1 and 2. They allowed 13 goals. Head Coach Joel Quenneville’s job was safe but changes were coming to the coaching staff. Earlier this week the Blackhawks decided to fire Assistant Coach Mike Kitchen.

Kitchen had been on Joel Quenneville’s staff since 2010. He was responsible for the defense and special teams. In the 4 games, the Blackhawks couldn’t play defense.   Nashville dictated the play. Every time they had the puck they skated in past the Chicago defenders for a scoring chance. The Blackhawks allowed the Predators to average 31 shots per game in the short series.

The Blackhawks were able to kill off penalties they took. Chicago killed off 87.5% of their penalties. Nashville was still able to set up the power play. Even if they didn’t score, they kept the puck in the Chicago zone and were able to shoot pucks towards the net. It was time to let Kitchen go because of the poor play of the defense.

According to ESPN, General Manager of the Chicago Black Hawks Stan Bowen said, “We believe this decision is best for our organization moving forward. Mike had an impact on two different Stanley Cup championship teams during his tenure in Chicago. We appreciate his many contributions and wish he and his family success in the future.”

This was the right move. Chicago played poorly in the defensive zone. Mike Kitchen didn’t seem to make adjustments for the Blackhawks to improve the defense during the series. It ultimately cost him his job. For Kitchen this will give him an opportunity for a fresh start. Hopefully he will learn from this series for his next coaching job.

  1. Thanks for the insight. He was responsible though. As you know in sports “it’s what have done for me lately”? The fact is they got swept and changes were coming.
