Jay Cutler is back in the NFL. He decided to unretire and suit up for the Miami Dolphins. This is after agreeing to a one year, $10 million contract. The deal has a base salary of $5 million with a $5 million bonus and he could earn $3 million in incentives. This move reunites Cutler with Dolphins’ Head Coach Adam Gase.
Miami was looking for a quarterback after starter Ryan Tannehill hurt himself at practice. He suffered a non-contact injury to his leg and could miss most of the season. The Dolphins looked at the options on the team. They could have decided to go with Matt Moore, who enters his 10th NFL season. The problem with him is he hasn’t been a regular starter in his career with a total of 28. Miami decided that free agent Colin Kaepernick wasn’t worth it either because his style of play isn’t consistent with the Adam Gase offense. Cutler was the answer since he knows the offense.
Cutler played under Gase in 2015 in Chicago. That year he passed for 3,659 yards and added 21 touchdowns. Cutler protected the football well in his offense with a total of only 11 interceptions, a career low. He shined in this offense even though it was only one year. It won’t take Cutler that long to relearn the system since he is familiar with it.
The tricky part with Cutler heading to Miami is what kind of football shape is he in? He retired May 5th. Cutler hasn’t been practicing or in training camp, giving the edge to Matt Moore. The other problem with Cutler is he takes chances down the field. He will throw the ball into double coverage and those passes are more times than not intercepted which not only kills drives but gives the opponents decent field position. Those can end in points.
The Dolphins are hoping that Cutler is the same quarterback he was in 2015. If he can protect the football and lead drives that end in points, the Dolphins might have success this season. If Cutler keeps turning the ball over, it will be a long year. On paper, Cutler is the answer at quarterback. Time will only tell.
What do you think of the Miami Dolphins agreeing to a one year contract with Jay Cutler?
