The Baltimore Ravens were looking to add a veteran quarterback to the roster. Starter Joe Flacco is out with a back injury and is expected to miss all of training camp and may not be ready for week 1. Ryan Mallett is the number one quarterback while Flacco is out, leaving 2nd year quarterback Dustin Vaughan as the only other quarterback on the roster. The Ravens talked to Colin Kaepernick about adding him to the roster, but a deal was never reached. On Monday the Ravens decided to cut Vaughan to make room for Thad Lewis.
Lewis enters his 4th season in the NFL. He has bounced around the league spending time in St. Louis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Huston, and Philadelphia. Last year he was on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster but was hurt during the preseason with an ACL tear which ended his season.
Lewis started 7 games in his NFL career. In those games he passed for 1,296 yards and 5 touchdowns. His biggest problem is turnovers. Lewis tossed 4 interceptions and fumbled 4 times, a total of 8 turnovers. That is far too many. The Ravens are going to need to work with Lewis on not only reading defenses but protecting the football. They can’t allow him to give the ball to the opposing defense.
On paper this is a move that makes sense. The Ravens needed a quarterback with NFL experience. It gives them more depth at the position. Vaughan didn’t have the practice since he hasn’t seen the field in a regular season game in his 2 years. Lewis gives the Ravens flexibility at the backup quarterback position. It is possible that if he outplays Ryan Mallett, Lewis could be the starter for the Baltimore Ravens. Hopefully adding Lewis is the right move.
What do you think of the Baltimore Ravens adding Thad Lewis?
