The New York Mets ended the season at 70-92. Manager Terry Collins decided to step down on October 1st. According to ABCNews.com, Collins said, “I wouldn’t say I’m resigning, I’m stepping down for sure, It’s been a blast. But it’s time.” New York is now searching for his replacement. They have reached out to Brad Ausmus who’s contract ran out in Detroit.
Ausmus is young at 48. He has managerial experience with the Detroit Tigers the past 4 years. The Tigers were unimpressive at 314-332. Ausmus took them to the postseason once in 2014. Unfortunately, the Tigers were swept in the American League Division Series by the Baltimore Orioles.
This past season was one to forget. The Tigers went 64-98, the worst record in the American League and tied with the San Francisco Giants for the least amount of wins in Major League Baseball. The Tigers saw enough and decided not to renew his contract.
Ausmus deserves another chance and it should be in New York. The Mets need a manager with managerial experience. The problem is he hasn’t been a decent manager. The Tigers were expecting him to bring them a World Series title but it never happened.
If the New York Mets want Ausmus, they must be patient with him. The Mets may not improve on their record next year, but they will play better baseball. It will take Ausmus a few years for them to become a contending team. The Mets can’t fire him after a season or two because that is not enough time to turn this team around.
It will be all up to Ausmus to accept the job. If he does, hopefully Ausmus turns the Mets into a playoff team year in and year out.
What do you think of the New York Mets reaching out to Brad Ausmus?
