The NFL trade deadline was at 4:00 PM ET Tuesday. Not many teams made a move, but the biggest deal involved the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers. The New England Patriots dealt Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2018 2nd-round pick. According to ESPN, New England Patriots’ Head Coach Bill Belichick said, “It’s definitely not something we wanted to walk away from. I felt like we rode it out as long as we could. Over a period of time, we explored every option possible to try to sustain it. But at this point, felt like we had to make a decision.”
Garoppolo was a 2nd-round pick by the Patriots in the 2014 NFL draft. He hasn’t seen the field that much because Tom Brady has been healthy throughout Garoppolo’s young career. He appeared in 17 games in the last 3 seasons. In his limited time, Garoppolo tossed for 690 yards and 5 touchdowns but hasn’t thrown an interception yet. He has protected the ball well and won’t throw into double coverage. Garoppolo may not have played a lot on the field, but he learned from one of the best quarterbacks to play in the NFL, Tom Brady.
This transaction doesn’t make a lot of sense for the New England Patriots. New England has already traded another of Tom Brady’s backups earlier this year. Jacoby Brissett was dealt to the Indianapolis Colts in September. Garoppolo was the backup for Tom Brady this year. It seems the Patriots are going to rely on Tom Brady’s health. They are also hoping he can play for a few years.
New England is taking a huge risk. They signed Brian Hoyer to be the backup to Brady. The Patriots know what they had in Garoppolo and he knew the offense. Hoyer is going to need to learn the offense and they don’t know what kind of quarterback he can be. When the Patriots put him in the game, Hoyer may not play as well as Garoppolo did and could turn the ball over and take chances throwing the football downfield. The Patriots hope this move works out for them.
