Herm Edwards Back On The Sidelines, This Time At Arizona State

By Jordan Long

The Arizona State Sun Devils have their new football coach, Herm Edwards. They have been looking for a coach since they fired Todd Graham on November 26. Graham will be allowed to coach the Sun Devils in their bowl game. After that Edwards will take over.

Edwards has plenty of football experience as a head coach, but it was in the NFL. He was the head coach of the New York Jets from 2001 to 2005. During those 5 years, the Jets were only 39-41 but made the playoffs 3 times. In 2006 Edwards was in Kansas City going 15-33 in 3 years with 1 playoff appearance. Overall Edwards is an unimpressive 54-74 in the NFL with a winning percentage of .422. Since 2009 Edwards has been part of the ESPN family as an analyst for ESPN programming.

He has always been interested in going back to coaching. Edwards wanted to go back to the NFL, but college is the second best choice. He hasn’t been in the college game since 1989 when he was the cornerbacks coach for San Jose State. Edwards wants to turn the program around.

According to ESPN, Edwards said, “I stand ready for the challenge of working with them to elevate Sun Devil Football. I am very excited and humbled to be the Arizona State head football coach.”

The Sun Devils are improved at the coaching position with this hire. Edwards knows how to coach a football team. Arizona State is hoping he can lead this team to a Pac-12 title but it will take a few years.

Arizona State has to be patient with him. It will take him a few years but Arizona State should eventually be a bowl team year in and year out. The way this works out for Arizona State is if they win a few Pac-12 Championships and maybe a birth into the College Football Playoff. Hopefully Edwards will do that with this football team

What do you think of Arizona State hiring Herm Edwards?
