Dallas Stars’ center Tyler Seguin agreed to a new contract extension to stay in Dallas. His original deal was set to expire following this upcoming season. They didn’t want any team to try to pick him up once the year was over. Seguin will now be in Dallas for 8 more years, paying him $9.85 million a year, the highest paid player on the Stars’ roster.
Seguin played well last season. He scored 40 goals and added 38 assists for a total of 78 points. His goals led the Stars. He was a valuable part of the Dallas Stars power play. Seguin set up near the net for rebounds. There were times where he was in front of the goaltender to screen him from seeing the puck. Seguin was able to tip-in the puck for goals. He totaled 14 power play goals while adding 11 power play assists. Even though Seguin played well offensively, the Stars missed the playoffs by three points with a record of 42-32-8 for a total of 92 points.
Seguin is one of the top scorers for the Stars. They have seen that the last 5 years. Seguin has gone over the 70 points mark every season including an 84 point season in 2014. He was way too valuable to the team to let him test free agency. If they did, many teams would be interested because of the way he plays the game on offense.
Now that the Stars are keeping him around, they have to make a run to the Stanley Cup Final in the next 8 years. The Stars have made the postseason twice with Seguin, 2014 and 2016. In 2014 Dallas lost in the 1st-round to the Anaheim Ducks in 6 games. 2016 Dallas advanced to the 2nd-round only to be knocked off by the St. Louis Blues in 7 games. Seguin didn’t preform well in either playoff series with a total of 1 goal and 2 assists.
The Stars are overpaying but Seguin is a “Super Star”. For this deal to work Seguin needs to help this team make the playoffs at least 4 times if not more. When they reach the postseason, Dallas needs to advance to the Western Conference Finals and appear in the Stanley Cup Final. If not they have wasted Seguin’s best years.
