2018 Heisman Trophy Finalists Preview

By Jordan Long

On Saturday, the most prestigious award in all of college football will be announced, the Heisman Trophy.  The finalists for the award are all quarterbacks.  These include Kyler Murray from the University of Oklahoma, Tua Tagovailoa from the University of Alabama and Dwayne Haskins from Ohio State University.  All of them are deserving of this honor.

Kyler Murray has been outstanding for the Oklahoma Sooners.  The Sooners finished the regular season at 12-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play.  Murray was one of the reasons Oklahoma played so well this season. Murray was efficient passing the football and didn’t turn the ball over.  He found his open receiver and rarely tossed into double coverage.  Murray finished with 4,053 yards passing , 40 touchdowns, and an impressive 7 interceptions.

Those passing yards alone helped Oklahoma go 12-1 and finish as the 4th and final team in the College Football Playoff.  It wasn’t just his arm on offense that gained yards but his legs as well.  When Murray had an opening to run, he would, finishing with 892 yards and 11 touchdowns.  His average yards per rush was 7.3 yards.

This year was Tua Tagovailoa’s first as the University of Alabama starting quarterback.  He made the most of his opportunity throwing for 3,353 yards and 37 touchdowns.  He was careful with the ball and didn’t allow defenders to intercept the ball often with only 4.  Alabama went 12-0.  They are the #1 seed in the College Football Playoff because of Tagovailoa’s efficiency on offense.

Dwayne Haskins had a decent year.  Ohio State trusted him to run the offense.  Haskins was able to lead Ohio State to a record of 12-1.   He passed for a total of 4,580 yards and 47 touchdowns.  He was just like Murray and Tagovailoa because he protected the football.  He rarely turned it over with 8 interceptions.

Heisman voters have a tough task this year.  There is not a front runner who should win it.  If I had a Heisman vote my winner would be Murray.  He did it with his arm and so did Tagovailoa and Haskins. The reason Murray separated himself from the other two is his rushing yards.  892 rushing yards is impressive from a quarterback.  For that reason he is the winner from me edging out Tagovailoa.  Be sure to watch ESPN tomorrow at 6 P.M. Mountain time to find out who is this years’ Heisman winner.
