Seattle Seahawks’ Quarterback Russell Wilson Earns His Payday, Now The Highest Paid Player In NFL History

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to a new contract with quarterback Russell Wilson.  The deal is for 4 years, paying him $140 million.   Wilson is guaranteed $107 million and it comes with a full no-trade clause, making him the highest paid player in NFL history.

Wilson is one of the top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL. His stats show how valuable he is for the Seattle Seahawks.  In his 7 years in the NFL, Wilson tossed for 25,624 yards and 196 touchdowns.  He is accurate on his throws.  Wilson will find the open receiver and those will go for long gains.  His passing percentage is 64.2%.

                The downside to his game is turnovers.  There are times he forces the football into double coverage and those are easy interceptions for the defense, throwing 63 of them.  Wilson has trouble holding onto the football when defenses bring pressure.    He doesn’t grip the ball close to his body and it makes it easy for them to knock the ball out of his hands for a total of 40 fumbles, far too many.

                Wilson is excited to stay in Seattle.  According to ESPN, Wilson said, “The guys I’ve always admired in sports, the guys that played at [their] locations for 15 to 20 years, guys like Derek Jeter, I want to be like that. I want to be remembered in that sense of what we want to do here in Seattle. So, we’re just getting started.”

                The Seahawks hope Wilson will bring a Super Bowl victory back to Seattle in the next 4 years.  He hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016.   That season they knocked off the Detroit Lions in the Wild-Card Round 26-6 before having their season end against the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round.  

                The Seahawks are taking a risk.   The problem is once free agency hits next year they may not have the money in cap space for free agents.   They will have to improve the football team, but with this contract they may not be able to.  This could end up hurting Seattle. 

The Seahawks have to hope Wilson stays healthy for the duration of the contract.  If Wilson is hurt or performs poorly, Seattle must pay him even though he isn’t worth that amount of money.  Hopefully for them, Seattle is a playoff team each year and advances to the Super Bowl again. Table 6 Co
