The NFL Draft begins Thursday and goes through Saturday. This year it will be held in Nashville, Tennessee. The Denver Broncos are slated to pick #10 in the 1st-round assuming they don’t trade up or down. They have plenty of needs heading into the draft which include quarterback, tight end, offensive lineman, and linebacker. Denver will have plenty of options at #10 if they keep the pick.
Denver might select a quarterback at #10. They have two options assuming they haven’t been picked yet, Drew Lock and Dwayne Haskins. Most mock drafts have Drew Lock going to the Broncos. Lock played his college football at the University of Missouri. In 4 years at Missouri he threw for an impressive 12,193 yards and 99 touchdowns. Lock rarely turned the ball over with 39 interceptions. He can run away from the defenders when he needs to with a total of 437 yards and 9 touchdowns.
The problem with Lock was trying to avoid being sacked. When pressure came, he had a difficult time running away from defenders when the pocket broke down. Lock ended up being sacked 62 times. If Denver decides to draft him, he can’t have big hits on him. He must throw the football away. Those smacks can add up in the NFL and who knows how long Lock will last.
Dwayne Haskins doesn’t have as much experience as Lock in the college game. Haskins appeared in 22 games at Ohio State University. In those games he totaled 5,396 yards passing and 54 touchdowns with an impressively low 9 interceptions. Ohio State protected him with 23 sacks.
Haskins wouldn’t be a bad quarterback for Denver at #10. The problem is he didn’t play that many years in college. That may end up hurting his development in the NFL.
If Haskins and Lock are already off the draft board, the Broncos will look to see who the best player available is. This could be linebacker Devin White. The Broncos need depth at the linebacker position. They know Von Miller and Bradley Chubb are their top linebackers to apply pressure to the quarterback. After them, the roster is thin. Adding another linebacker, Devin White, makes sense.
White played 3 years at LSU. He showed he could make tackles and rarely miss bringing down a runner or receiver in the open field with 286 tackles. White plays in coverage in passing plays and sacks the quarterback on blitzes. He had 8.5 sacks at LSU while adding 3 interceptions.
White would take pressure off of Miller and Chubb on passing plays. He will be in the face of the quarterback which could be sacks or interceptions. White may also be able to knock the football for fumbles. He is a fit for the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos will decide who is best for their football team. It is possible Denver won’t stay at #10. It may make the most sense to trade down to have more picks in the later rounds. If Denver likes an athlete and are afraid a team is going to select him, then they will trade up. Find out what the Broncos do on Thursday. It is the future of the franchise. I
