The Colorado Rockies are set to call up prospect Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers is expected to make his Major League debut soon. It could happen tomorrow against the Philadelphia Phillies. He is expected to play shortstop and 2nd base for Colorado.
The Rockies are not sure the status of shortstop Trevor Story. He ran into outfielder Raimel Tapia when trying to catch a foul ball in the bottom of the 9th inning last night in Boston. They knocked knees and it looked like it could have been a major injury. Story left the game and the Rockies lost 6-5 in 10 innings. Luckily, Story suffered a bone bruise and won’t miss that much time.
Rodgers can play shortstop. He appeared in 6 games at shortstop this season for the Rockies Triple A affiliate the Albuquerque Isotopes. The only problem is he made 3 errors which is far too many. His natural position is 2nd base. Rogers was placed at 2nd base for 25 games this year and made 4 errors.
The Rockies may want him at 2nd base. Colorado has struggled this year trying to figure out a 2nd baseman who can smack the baseball. According to CBSsports.com, Colorado’s 2nd basemen have a combined batting average of .200 which is 26th in Major League Baseball for the position and they have yet to hit a home run.
With the Isotopes Rodgers proved he can smack the baseball. In 135 plate appearances, Rodgers holds a .356 batting average with 9 homeruns and 21 RBI’s. Besides the home runs, he hits the ball in the gap in the outfield for extra base hits with 10 doubles and 1 triple. Rodgers is patient at the plate with 14 walks.
The Rockies hope Rodgers will help the Rockies. The worst case for him is he struggles at the Major League level and is sent back down to Albuquerque. This is Rodgers’ time to shine. His play will determine how long he will stay with the Colorado Rockies.
