Time For The Miami Marlins To Move On From Manager Don Mattingly

By Jordan Long

The Miami Marlins stand at 44-75, the worst record in the National League.  They are going to miss the playoffs for the 16th straight season.  This also marks the Marlins 10th consecutive losing season.  There are questions surrounding Manager Don Mattingly’s future due to the poor performance.

Mattingly has been the Marlins Manager for the past 4 seasons.  His teams seem to play worse every year.  In 2016 they won 79 games and were 7.5 games from a Wild Card spot. After that, the Marlins had 77 and 63 victories.   His overall record with the Marlins is an unimpressive 263-339, a winning percentage of .437.

This was not what the Marlins expected when they hired Mattingly prior to 2016.  He had been with the Dodgers where he went 446-363 with 3 trips to the postseason.  They were hoping he would help this team be competitive.

There are rumors he could be done at the end of the year.  Marlins’ CEO  Derek Jeter hasn’t made a decision yet.  According to CBSsports.com, Jeter said, “There hasn’t been a decision yet. To be honest with you, we’ve been so focused on the trade deadline and see what we could do with it. At the end of every year, we sit down and evaluate all members of the organization, whether it’s the manager, coaches, player development, scouting, front office.”

Jeter needs to decide what is best for the future of the baseball team.  Mattingly has shown he isn’t the best Manager.  Sure it hasn’t been all his fault since the Marlins have let go of talent such as trading Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees in the offseason of 2017.   The Marlins haven’t signed high profile free agents.

At the end of the day it’s “what have you done for me lately.”  Lately Mattingly hasn’t managed this team to be competitive.  He had 4 seasons to do it and failed.  It is time to move on.  Jeter needs to realize this.  Hopefully at the end of the year, the Marlins will be searching for a new manager who will help them be an improved team and make a push to the playoffs in 2020.
