Mike McCarthy Set To Be The Dallas Cowboys’ Next Head Coach

By Jordan Long

The Dallas Cowboys have announced their next Head Coach for the franchise.  The job was open when the Cowboys decided to part ways with Jason Garret whose contract runs out on January 14th.  They hired his replacement, Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy has NFL experience as a Head Coach.  He was the Green Bay Packers’ Head Coach for 13 years from 2006 to 2018.  During those seasons, he went to the playoffs 9 times including winning Super Bowl XLV when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.  His overall record is 125-77-2 in the regular season, a winning percentage of .618.  In the playoffs, he coached 18 games with a record of 10-8.

In 2018, McCarthy was on the hot seat. Green Bay missed the postseason in 2017 with a 7-9 record.  To save his job, the Packers had to not only make the postseason but win the division and possibly have a deep run in the playoffs.  That didn’t happen.  They were 4-7-1 and Green Bay decided it was best to move on from him.

After he was let go by the Packers, he was in high demand to interview for Head Coaching jobs because of his experience.  The Jets talked to him but went with Adam Gase.  McCarthy turned down a chance to speak with Tampa Bay and Arizona.  He took 2019 off from coaching.

The Cowboys knew in order to become a winning team and a threat to make the Super Bowl, they needed a coach with NFL knowledge.  Mike McCarthy brings plenty of it to Dallas.  He knows how to turn a franchise into a Super Bowl threat.

Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones must build a stronger team around McCarthy.  Jones’  personnel moves will determine the fate of the team.  If he can’t improve the team in free agency or the draft, it will be difficult for McCarthy to win games.  In the past, Jones has been patient with coaches.  He knows the 1st year might not bring change, but a few years will.   Jones just wants a Super Bowl ring which hasn’t happened since Super Bowl 30. McCarthy is the right man for the job to accomplish that feat.
