The L.A. Rams are into training camp. They are scheduled to play their first game of the season on September 13 against the Dallas Cowboys, assuming the season isn’t delayed by the COVID 19 Pandemic. There is one player who thinks he deserves a new contract, wide receiver Robert Woods.
Woods has been the top wide receiver for the Rams. Since he agreed to a 5-year, $34 million contract in the 2017 offseason, Woods has caught 232 footballs for 3,134 yards and 13 touchdowns. His average yards per catch is an impressive 13.5 yards. Woods also surpassed the 1,000 yard mark the last two years.
Woods feels like he deserves a new contract because of his performance. According to profootballtalk.nbcsports.com, Woods said, “You want to go in and get paid for what you’re worth — I think everyone feels that way. I’ve been working here for the Rams and want to be here for the rest of my career, keep playing here in L.A., home stadium. I want to get the job done and be here long-term.”
Woods’ stats show he should be paid. There is no doubt the last two seasons he outplayed his current deal. He wants to be paid like Odell Beckham Jr. who is going to earn around $15 million the next 3 years. Woods stats are better than Beckham Jr. the last two years. The difference is Beckham Jr. has gone over 1,000 mark more times than Woods. Beckham Jr. has 5 seasons of 1,000 or more yards.
The problem with Woods’ current deal is there are two years left before he hits free agency in 2022. Woods is going to be paid around $8.1 million this year and $10.1 million next year. It could be the Rams are going to wait to see what he can do in those seasons. Woods isn’t in a contract year until next year. He needs to prove what he is worth. The worst case is Woods’ play may trail off or he could end up with an injury. If his stats start to go downhill, the Rams could let him go at the end of next season. Woods should play this year like it is his last in L.A. If that is the case, he maybe earns a new deal.
