New York Jets’ Head Coach Adam Gase could be on the hot seat. Gase is in his second season in New York. The Jets haven’t made the postseason since 2010 when they reached the AFC Championship game. They are hoping to end that streak.
The Jets went 7-9 last year. This year for Gase it is playoffs or bust. Last week they didn’t start the season the way they wanted. They lost 27-17 to the Buffalo Bills and looked awful. New York was outplayed on both sides of the ball. On offense, which is Adam Gase’s specialty, they totaled 15 first downs. The offense had 254 yards. When it came to passing the football, they threw for 202 yards. They couldn’t get the running game going, totaling 52 yards.
On defense, the Jets allowed the Bills to pick up 31 first downs. New York gave up 404 total yards, 306 of them through the air. The Jets permitted 98 rushing yards. Buffalo held the ball for 41 minutes and 16 seconds while the Jets controlled the ball for 18 minutes and 44 seconds.
Once the game was over, there were rumors swirling about Gase’s job security. Those rumors may have been squashed this week. According to CBSsports.com, CEO of the New York Jets Christopher Johnson said, “I think that he has a lot more in him as a head coach than some of our fans are giving him credit for. I understand. They want to see success. I think that they will.”
The truth is it was one bad week for the New York Jets. Week 1 doesn’t determine the year. There are 16 teams in the NFL that are 0-1. Even if they start 0-2 it isn’t time to panic. He has plenty of time to turn this season around with 15 games left. The records they should think of making changes is at 0-7 or 0-8. They may fire Gase if they finish the year at 4-12, otherwise, Gase is here to stay. It is his second year in New York. It takes a coach around 3 years for the players to understand a coach’s system in the NFL. Hopefully, the Jets keep him around for one more year and they see better results.
