The Dallas Mavericks lost out on DeAndre Jordan. There is one basketball player who is willing to come play for them. Point guard Deron Williams wants his release from the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are in discussions with Williams to buyout the two years and $43.3 million left on his contract. They have to do this before August 31st. Williams and the Nets must agree to a buyout which is what the Nets prefer. If he is cut, he is willing to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. How would he fit into this team?
Deron Williams had a chance to be a Maverick in 2012. He decided to take a five-year, $99 million contract with the Nets. After three years, he desires a fresh start. Having played high school basketball in Texas, Williams would be returning home.
Williams is an excellent point guard. Last year he averaged 13 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. He would help this team at the point guard position. The only other point guards on this team are J.J. Barea and Raymond Felton. Both are adequate but not an All-Star like Deron Williams is. Williams would end up being the starting point guard for the Dallas Mavericks, assuming they can sign him. He would knock down shots on the offensive end and set up his teammates for open looks and help them on the defensive end.
The Mavericks wouldn’t be the only team interested in Deron Williams. He played 6 of his 10 years in the NBA in Utah. Utah might be a possibility because it was the team where he started his NBA career. The problem with the Utah Jazz is they aren’t a playoff team yet. They are rebuilding and could be a playoff team in the next few years.
Dallas seems like the more logical place. They are primed to be in the playoffs this upcoming season. Last year Dallas was a 7th seed in the West. Adding Deron Williams could help them earn a 5 or 6 seed in the competitive Western Conference. Another reason Williams would choose Dallas over Utah is because Wesley Matthews is on the team. Matthews and Williams played one year together in Utah during the 2009-2010 season when the Jazz went 53-29.
Dallas is motivated to sign a high-priced free agent after being rejected by DeAndre Jordan. Deron Williams would be an upgrade for the point guard position. If he is bought out by the Brooklyn Nets, Dallas should be the place that lands him.
What do you think about Deron Williams possibly joining the Dallas Mavericks?
