The New York Jets fell to 0-4 after last night’s 37-28 loss to the Denver Broncos. New York Jets’ Head Coach Adam Gase’s seat is only getting hotter. Reports were that the Jets were going to let him go if they lost to Denver. Now that week 4 is in the books for the Jets, New York is planning on keeping Gase for the rest of the season.
The Jets hired Gase on January 11, 2019. He had been the Miami Dolphins’ Head Coach from 2016 to 2018. Miami didn’t have success under him going 23-25, a winning percentage of .479. Miami made the postseason in 2016 but lost in the Wild Card Round to the Pittsburgh Steelers 30-12. Miami saw enough and fired him after 2018 when they went 7-9.
The Jets thought Gase was the best coach out there. His stats didn’t show it but the Jets were hoping his offense would deliver better results than the previous Head Coach, Todd Bowles. Bowles was a defensive minded coach and the Jets went a disappointing 24-40 from 2015 to 2018, a winning percentage of .375. The Jets were anticipating Gase would lead them to the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
New York wasn’t awful last year. They went 7-9. New York expected to be at least a .500 team or better this year. Quarterback Sam Darnold was going to thrive in the offense. It was his second season in the system and he knew the play calls better than last year.
Unfortunately, the Jets haven’t looked competitive on offense or defense this year. The Jets have scored an average of 16.25 points per game. Last night, they scored 28 which is the most all season. Darnold has passed for 792 yards and 3 touchdowns. He has been picked off 4 times. Darnold’s offensive line isn’t giving him time to throw the football and has been sacked 12 times, far too many.
The defense is allowing 239.75 yards passing per game. They aren’t creating pressure with 6 sacks. In last night’s loss, the defense gave up 359 yards and couldn’t come up with a sack on Denver. They were also undisciplined at times with 11 penalties for 118 yards.
According to USA Today.com, Gase said, “We’re working to get this thing right. I’m not happy about this. I know we can play way better than this. I know we cannot beat ourselves and do the things we’re doing.”
The Jets need to let Gase go. They haven’t won a game to this point this year. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier. They face the Cardinals next week. The NFL is a week-to-week league but they may not have many victories this season. The Jets are now 7-13 under Gase. He has proven he can’t coach this team. They are better off firing him now then wait because their playoff hopes are starting to fade. An interim Head Coach may help them play better football.
