Big Payday Coming For Lamar Jackson

By Jordan Long

The Baltimore Ravens need to negotiate with quarterback Lamar Jackson about a contract extension.  He is on his rookie contract which is set to expire after the 2022 season.  The Ravens will want to keep him past 2022.

Jackson has been the Ravens’ starting quarterback for the past 3 years.  He has passed for 7,085 yards and 68 touchdowns.  He is careful with the football and doesn’t force the ball downfield into coverage with 18 interceptions.   Besides Jackson’s ability to throw the football, he can use his legs to gain yards, totaling 2,906 yards with 19 touchdowns.

The Ravens have become a Super Bowl contending team with him under center, going an impressive 30-7.   Baltimore has advanced to the playoffs every year with him as the starting quarterback but haven’t made it past the divisional round.

According to ESPN.com, General Manager Eric DeCosta said, “[He] certainly deserves a contract. He has played phenomenal football over the last couple of years. My intention is to keep him in Baltimore for many, many years.”

The Ravens will get a contract done with Jackson.  He is going to be the quarterback for many years to come.  He is their key to winning a Super Bowl.  Jackson might even be the top quarterback to ever play for the Ravens.

The Ravens don’t have to do anything too quickly.  Jackson’s contract is for two more years.  After that, they can agree to a new deal.  The market could decide what kind of agreement he will receive from Baltimore.  The Ravens might have to pay him around $20 million a year which could be a high cap hit. The worst case is Baltimore waits until the end of the 2022 season to talk to him about a contract.  They could always franchise tag him to give the Ravens more time.  Jackson isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
