Cornerback Kyle Fuller A Free Agent, Next Stop The Mile High City?

The Chicago Bears cut cornerback Kyle Fuller which saves them $11 million in cap space.  Fuller is now a free agent.  There are plenty of teams interested in him including the Denver Broncos.

                Fuller was Chicago’s  top cornerback last year.  He played coverage on the opponents’ top wide receiver.   Fuller knocked the ball away for incompletions.  He ended last year with 8 passes defended and 1 interception. Fuller also tackled runners in the open field totaling 65 tackles.

                In his career, Fuller has proven he can cover top wide receivers.  He has 82 passes defended with 19 interceptions.  Fuller also totaled 390 tackles and 4 forced fumbles.

                The Bears needed to let him go to save money.  His cap hit was too much for them to keep.  Saving $11 million gives the Bears a chance to sign other free agents.  Fuller has his chance to start over with a new franchise.  The Broncos should be interested.  

                The Broncos’ secondary couldn’t stop opponents from gaining yards through the air.  They gave up 237.9 passing yards per game, 16^th in the league.  They think they have upgraded the secondary since they signed Ronald Darby.   Adding Fuller would improve the secondary even more.  Fuller, Darby, and Bryce Callahan make the Broncos a better secondary.  Quarterbacks will need to be careful with the football because all of them can knock it away or cause interceptions with tipped passes.

                Fuller knows the defensive system Head Coach Vic Fangio runs. Fuller played under him when Fangio was the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 2015 to 2018.  Fuller had his best season in the NFL in 2018 when he picked the ball off 7 times, the most in his career.

                The Broncos should consider Fuller.  If they do reach an agreement with him, the cornerback position is pretty much set.  Denver may not draft a cornerback with the 9^th overall pick in the NFL draft.  They could look at other areas or even trade up or down to draft the player they want.

                The Broncos need to call Fuller to see what his asking price is.  That will determine his value.  The worst case is Fuller is too expensive and the Broncos move on.  Fuller would be an improvement to the defense and help Denver improve on their 5-11 record.
