The Colorado Rockies made a shocking trade today. They sent All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and pitcher LaTroy Hawkins to the Toronto Blue Jays. In return the Rockies received shortstop Jose Reyes, reliever Miguel Castro, and Minor League pitchers Jesus Tinoco and Jeff Hoffman.
This wasn’t a decent trade. Tulowitzki is one of the best shortstops in the game and a fan favorite. He has played his whole career with the Rockies. In his nine-years with them he is a .299 hitter. He also has 657 RBIs and 188 home runs. Troy Tulowitzki helped Colorado go all the way to the World Series in 2007 and earn a Wild Card spot in 2009. Tulowitzki is a five-time All-Star. He won a Gold Glove in 2010 and 2011.
Earlier this season, the Colorado Rockies told the media that they weren’t going to trade Tulowitzki this season. Tulowitzki didn’t want to be dealt and was hoping to play his whole career with the Colorado Rockies. This was strictly a business decision made by Colorado.
According to ESPN, LaTroy Hawkins is eager to be with the Blue Jays “I’m excited to be going to an organization that has a chance to win, and they’re showing the commitment to winning this year and for years to come. I’ve got three good months left in me. Hopefully, I can help the Blue Jays get to the World Series and win the World Series. That’s a wonderful way to end my career. I can’t see a more fitting way to end it.”
It seems like the Rockies acquired a lot in this trade, but they really didn’t. Jose Reyes is the best part of this deal. In his career Reyes is batting .291 with 115 home runs and 602 RBI’s. His numbers are way down this year. He only has 4 home runs and 34 RBI’s.
Colorado sought pitching. They collected three arms. The problem is that Jesus Tinoco and Jeff Hoffman may not pitch in the Majors for a few years. The Rockies really don’t know what they have until they pitch for them. This is the first year that Miguel Castro has pitched at the Major League level. Castro’s record is 0-2. He has pitched 12.1 innings with an ERA of 4.38 and 12 strikeouts. This may help the bullpen.
General Manager of the Colorado Rockies, Jeff Bridich wanted to make a major change. It’s still a poor deal. The Rockies may make more moves before Friday’s trade deadline.
