Too Much Wide Receiver Depth, DaeSean Hamilton Is The Odd Man Out In Denver

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos are preparing for the NFL Draft which starts on April 29th and ends on May 1st.  Denver owns the 9th pick in the 1st round,  assuming they don’t trade up or down.  The Broncos are taking calls on wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton who could be dealt by the draft.

The Broncos drafted Hamilton in the 4th round of the NFL draft in 2018.  The Broncos were anticipating he could help this team at the wide receiver position and special teams.  In his rookie year, Hamilton had 30 catches for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns.  His average yards per catch was 8.1.  Hamilton even played as the Broncos’ punt returner.  He wasn’t impressive with 31 yards total in returns.

In 2019, the Broncos hoped Hamilton would take a larger step in the Broncos’ offense.  It didn’t happen.  He had fewer catches at 28 but more yards at 297 with 1 touchdown.  This past year Hamilton ended up with 293 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns which aren’t bad numbers.

The Broncos are looking to deal him because they have talent at wide receiver and Hamilton is buried in the depth chart.  The Broncos’ top 2 wide receivers are Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy.  Both of them can catch the football for large chunks of yards.  K J Hamler has shown he can be the slot or the #3 receiver.  After Hamler is Tim Patrick who has been a reliable #4 option. The Broncos even use tight end Noah Fant in passing plays.  Unfortunately for Hamilton, he is a pretty good wide receiver stuck behind them.

The Broncos also don’t see him as a special teams player. They have their returners in Diontae Spencer and Tyrie Cleveland.  This means Hamilton is the odd man out.

According to MSN.com, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said, “I believe that they would move him for the right place. This is a name that I’ll be watching as we get closer to the draft and during the draft to see if Hamilton can get himself a fresh start elsewhere.”

The Broncos will wait to see what kind of trade value they can get for Hamilton.  At best a franchise may give the Broncos a 5th-round draft pick but at worst a 6th or 7th-round draft selection.  That would be more than fair value for the wide receiver.  At least it is something back for Denver.  In the end, Hamilton needs a new city to continue his NFL career.
