The Indianapolis Colts agreed to a contract extension with star wide receiver T.Y. Hilton. The deal is for five years and worth $65 million, $39 million is guaranteed. Hilton was set to enter the last year of his rookie contract. The Colts decided they didn’t want to lose him at the end of the year. Is he really worth that amount of money?
The Colts drafted T.Y. Hilton in the third-round of the 2012 NFL draft. He has been a productive wide out for the Colts. In three seasons he caught 214 passes for 3,289 yards with 19 touchdowns. According to ESPN, Hilton has 17 receptions of at least 40 yards or more since the start of the 2012 season, ranking him third in the NFL. Only DeSean Jackson and A.J. Green have more. That’s just in the regular season. His play carried over to the postseason. The Colts made the playoffs the last three seasons. In those games Hilton has 36 receptions for 604 yards but only 2 touchdowns. Those are not bad numbers for a young receiver.
The Colts had to keep one of quarterback Andrew Luck’s favorite targets. This insures that Luck will have a big time receiver for years to come. According to ESPN, Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement, “It’s a great day for the Indianapolis Colts, T.Y. Hilton and his family. We’re extremely happy as an organization to ensure that T.Y. will continue to be a part of our journey for many years to come. His daily excellence on and off the field is a shining example of an individual striving for greatness and what it truly means to be a Colt.”
The Colts had to make this deal with T.Y. Hilton. He’s their number one wide receiver. They couldn’t have allowed him to reach free agency. Plenty of teams would have been interested in signing him. The Colts now have him for five more years. The rest of the NFL needs to watch out for Hilton because he will be even better. Once they agree to a contract extension with Andrew Luck, the Colts will have a superior quarterback and receiver combination which will be unmatched for years to come.
What do you think of the Colts signing T.Y. Hilton to contract extension?
