The L.A. Rams have decided to cut DeSean Jackson. Jackson asked the Rams to let him go but they wanted to find a trade partner to at least get something back for him. A deal never materialized and Jackson is a free agent who now can sign with any team.
The Rams agreed to a 1-year deal with Jackson worth $2.75 million guaranteed but the deal could have been worth up to $4.5 million. L.A. was expecting him to help this offense out at the wide receiver position. Jackson was going to play opposite of Robert Woods. With him on one side and Woods on the other, it could be difficult for the defensive backs to guard because both of them can catch the football. Those caught passes were going to be first downs or longer. Adding a veteran quarterback in Matt Stafford was also key because he would look for both of these wide receivers. It seemed like a match.
It didn’t work out. Jackson totaled 221 yards receiving and 1 touchdown. That doesn’t sound productive but his average yards per catch was an impressive 27.6 yards with a long of 75 yards.
Jackson wanted out of L.A. He was inactive for the Rams 38-22 victory over the Houston Texans this past Sunday. This was a sign they were going to try to move him. The Rams received calls, but they never found the right trade. They decided it was best to cut Jackson so he can find a team to be on for the rest of the year.
According to msn.com, Jackson said on Instagram, “I am very grateful for the time that I spent playing for the LA Rams. Although this isn’t the outcome that we wanted, I am extremely appreciative for the opportunity & support given to me by the Rams’ Coaches & all of the Fans. I understand that everything happens for a reason & I look forward to beginning the next chapter of my NFL career. Thank you.”
Jackson has the opportunity to find another team that is a better fit. One team that should be interested in him is the Las Vegas Raiders. Las Vegas is currently 5-2 and on top of the AFC West Division. They are in great shape right now to make the playoffs.
The Raiders are looking for another wide receiver. They just cut Henry Ruggs for his involvement in a fatal crash while driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). The Raiders need to make a call to Jackson. He can take Ruggs’ place in the lineup. Carr may look for him because of his ability to create separation from the defensive backs to be open. These catches might be first downs or longer.
Another team out there who could earn a playoff spot this season might find Jackson is the difference in them advancing or not in the postseason. Jackson will take his time to decide what team will be the best fit for him moving forward.
