The Green Bay Packers sit at 3-6, 2nd place in the NFC North Division. The Minnesota Vikings lead the division at 7-1. The Packers look to snap a 5-game losing streak when they face the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday. Rodgers might be playing for his job.
Rodgers has passed for 2,091 yards and 14 touchdowns. Those aren’t awful numbers. His problem is he isn’t reading defenses well. Rodgers is forcing the ball into coverage and those have been tipped away for incompletions or led to 7 interceptions.
In last week’s game against the Detroit Lions, Rodgers was able to march the Packers down the field with 291 passing yards. The problem was when they reached the red zone, he threw a season high 3 interceptions while tossing just 1 touchdown.
The Packers are going to start Rodgers this week against the Dallas Cowboys. A win would snap their skid. Another loss and Green Bay would be looking for more answers.
Hall of Fame safety LeRoy Butler believes Aaron Rodgers has three more games to prove he can continue to be the starter for the Packers. According to MSN.com, Butler said, “OK, say you lose three more games. Look at that in perspective. You got the Cowboys, — best defense — I mean the defense — Micah Parsons, oh my goodness. And then you play, when they put my name up in the ring of honor, the Titans. They got a young quarterback. That defense gets after you as well, then you got the Eagles. best team in the league. After that point, if you’ve lost those games, you’ve got to get Jordan Love in there at some point, because there’s no playoffs. I mean, there’s no playoffs, you’re not in the playoffs. You have to find out at some point can Jordan Love play because you can’t get rid of Aaron Rodgers because of his contract. But you can find a way to get Jordan Love some work to just kind of find out what you’re going to have in a few years.”
Butler isn’t wrong with his assessment. The next three games are going to determine where the Packers’ season goes. If they end up winning all three games, the Packers would be 6-6. Green Bay might still be in the thick of the NFC playoff race for a Wild Card spot. Even if they are at 5-7, there is still hope.
Losing two or three of those games would increase the likelihood the Packers would play themselves out of a playoff spot. Their record at that point would be 4-8 or at worst 3-9. Then the Packers may be playing for a top ten pick. At that point why not play the rest of the year with Jordan Love at quarterback?
Love was drafted by the Green Bay Packers 26th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Packers don’t know if Love is the next franchise quarterback for the team or a 1st round bust. Love only started one game which was in 2021. His starting record is 0-1. Overall Love is 42 of 71 passing for 484 yards and 2 touchdowns. Love has thrown 3 interceptions. The truth is that is not enough playing time for Love. He needs to see more action on the field.
The Packers know they have struggled to play great football. The next three games are huge. If they are out of a playoff race, it could be time to bench Rodgers for Love. That may not sit well with Rodgers. It’s the only way the Packers will know if Love is their next quarterback. Then again, Rodgers might help them crawl out of this hole and be back in the NFC playoff race.
