The Boston Bruins Sizzling Start On The Home Ice

The Boston Bruins are the hottest team to start the NHL season.  They stand at 14-2 for a total of 28 points, the highest amount in the NHL.  The next team to them is the Vegas Golden Knights who have 26 points.

The amazing part about the Bruins’ hot beginning is they have a new Head Coach.  They fired  Bruce Cassidy on June 7th.   Cassidy spent 6 seasons as the Bruins’ Head Coach.  Boston went an impressive 245-108-46 with him as Head Coach.  Boston never missed the postseason with Cassidy as their coach.  The problem was Cassidy didn’t bring the city a Stanley Cup victory. The closest he got was in 2019 when they advanced to the Stanley Cup Final.  Unfortunately, they were beaten by the St. Louis Blues.

Boston hired Jim Montgomery to replace Cassidy. Montgomery brought in 114 games of NHL Head Coaching experience with the Dallas Stars.  With Dallas, Montgomery was 61-43-10.  Dallas earned a playoff spot once, in 2019. Dallas lost in the 2nd-round to the St. Louis Blues.

Montgomery was let go on December, 10th, 2019.   Montgomery went to rehab for alcohol abuse.  At the time of his firing, Dallas was 18-11-3.  That season, the NHL finished in the NHL COVID Bubble.  The Stars went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final but were beaten by the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2.

Montgomery knew he had a talented team in Boston.  This team could score with forwards David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci and Taylor Hall.  They were going to be the key to their season.

Right now, Boston is the only undefeated team in the NHL at home.  They are an impressive 9-0-0 at the TD Garden.  This is the most wins to begin a season at home without a loss in Bruins’ history.

It is no surprise why they are having success at home.  In the TD Garden, Boston’s offense has been tough to beat.  They score 3.89 goals per game.  When it comes to their home power play, they score on 25.6% of their opportunities.

Defensively at home, Boston doesn’t allow teams to spend time in their defensive zone for scoring chances.  They give up an remarkably low 1.78 goals per game at the Garden.  On the power play kill, Boston kills off 89.7% of the penalties they take.

Boston knows to have a successful season, they have to take care of business on home ice.   They have so far this season.  Boston will falter at home at some point.  It’s still impressive they haven’t lost at home yet.  Boston has two home games before a two-game road trip.  They face Philadelphia on Thursday and Chicago on Saturday. Their home winning streak could hit 11-0.  It’s been impressive what Boston has been able to accomplish on the home ice so far this season.
