Closer Kenley Jansen’s New Home For The Next 2-years, The Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox finished the 2022 season at 78-84, last in the American League East Division.  One of their biggest problems was the bullpen pitching.  They couldn’t trust their arms with an ERA of 4.59, 26th in baseball and knew an upgrade was needed. They already added Chris Martin who pitched for the Dodgers but wanted another arm.  Boston agreed to a contract with Kenley Jansen.

            Jansen spent last year with the Atlanta Braves.  In the regular season, he was one of the best relievers in the game.  When Jansen came into the game, the Braves knew he would usually save the game.  Jansen saved 41 games while blowing 7.  His ERA was 3.38 with a record of 5-2.

            In the postseason,  Jansen pitched 2 innings in the National League Divisional Series.  In those appearances, his era was 4.50 with 1 save.  The Braves would end up getting eliminated by the Philadelphia Phillies in 4 games.  Once the last out was recorded in game 4 when Atlanta lost 8-3, the Braves let Jansen test free agency.  It was clear the Braves didn’t want him back.

            Boston knew they wanted another arm in the bullpen. Jansen was one of the best out there.  They agreed to a 2-year, $32 million contract.  Jansen will improve the bullpen.

            It is expected Jansen will be the closer for Boston for the next 2 years.  In his career, Jansen has thrived at that position.  He has struck out 1,107 batters while walking 226 of them.  Jansen is trusted to shut the door.  Throughout his career he has been able to. He totaled 391 saves in the regular season while blowing only 52 of those opportunities.

            Of course, Boston would like to reach the postseason. Jansen brings in playoff experience.  In the course of his career, Jansen has appeared in 65.1 innings in the postseason.  His record is 3-2 with an ERA of 2.20.  He also recorded 20 saves blowing 4.

            The Red Sox have upgraded the bullpen so far this offseason.  Boston anticipates the moves they made will help close the gap between them and the New York Yankees. Even if Boston doesn’t win the American East Division, a Wild Card spot should be the gal.
