Sean McVay Mulling His Future In L.A.

By Jordan Long

The L.A. Rams finished the season at 5-12.  They set a record with the most losses for a defending Super Bowl Champion in NFL history.  Once the season ended last week, Head Coach Sean McVay is thinking about retiring from the NFL.  He has already told his assistant coaches and coordinators to seek other jobs.

McVay has been with the Rams for the past 6 years. Prior to becoming the Ram’s Head Coach, he was the offensive coordinator for Washington from 2014 to 2016.   The Rams hired him because he was one of the best up-and-coming offensive minds in the NFL game at age 32.

The Rams had just fired Jeff Fisher following 5 years.  At the time of Fisher’s firing, they stood at 4-9.  Fisher led the Rams to an unimpressive 31-45-1 record. The Rams never earned a playoff spot with Fisher as Head Coach.

The Rams wanted to make a splash at Head Coach.  They did with McVay.  McVay was very successful as the Rams’ Head Coach.  They have gone an impressive 60-38, a winning percentage of .612.  The Rams also went to the playoffs 4 times, while advancing to 2 Super Bowls.  Of course, the Rams knocked off the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl 56, 23-20.

McVay hinted at early retirement, even after the Rams won the Super Bowl last year.  He is only 36 years old far too young to want to stop coaching.  Then again maybe the desire isn’t there.  The guy has won a Super Bowl and every coach wants to do that.  He is going to take his time to figure out his NFL future.  The Rams’ front office and ownership are going to allow McVay to take his time to reach a final decision. It could be to walk away from coaching at the NFL level which would be a surprise.

Even though the Rams are going to allow him time to figure out his future, he needs to decide soon so the Rams can start a coaching search to find his replacement.  For his assistants, at least they have the okay to seek other jobs. The best case is McVay decides to stay but that is up to him.
