The Denver Broncos have been busy in free agency. They have agreed to contracts with guard Ben Powers and offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey who are going to help protect quarterback Russell Wilson. Denver also replaced running back Chase Edmonds who they cut, signing Samaje Perine. Perine agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million contract.
Perine has played in the NFL for the past 6 years. He has served as a backup running back in Cincinnati, Washington, and Miami. Last year he was with the Cincinnati Bengals. He touched the ball 95 times with 394 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Perine played behind Joe Mixon who was the featured running back.
In his NFL career, Perine has rushed the ball 401 times, not a large amount. He is still productive with 1,592 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns. In the passing game, Perine is a running back who will go out for passes out of the backfield. He has caught 101 passes for 736 yards and 6 touchdowns. The best part about Perine’s game is his ability to hold onto the football. He protects it and won’t fumble it with a total of 2 in his career.
Denver knew they needed to upgrade the backup running back position. Their starter is Javonte Williams but they really don’t know what they are going to get from him this upcoming season. Williams is coming off an ACL tear. They hope Williams will be back to running like he did before the injury. It is possible he is not. If that is the case. Perine may be the key to the Broncos’ running game.
Denver has $10 million in cap space left. They may not sign anybody else. The only move they may do is to trade wide receiver Courtland Sutton saving the Broncos $14 million in cap space this upcoming year. Otherwise, Denver will be looking at the NFL draft which begins on April 27th and ends on April 29th.
