A Reunion With Free Agent Defensive End Shelby Harris In Denver?

By Jordan Long

There is one player who is still a surprise NFL free agent defensive end, Shelby Harris.  He was released by the Seattle Seahawks on March 14th.  Denver might be a landing spot for him.

Harris is an 8-year veteran.   He has played for the then Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Seattle Seahawks.  Harris was in Denver from 2017 to 2021.  During that time he appeared in 75 games while starting 49 of them.  Harris became the Broncos’ best defensive end.  He could rush the quarterback to sack them and tip passes away.  Harris totaled 21.5 sacks and tipped away 25 passes.

When it came to stopping the run, Harris was one of the Broncos’ best players.  He wrapped up a runner and brought him to the ground.  Those were for short gains or losses.  Harris totaled 203 tackles in his time in the Mile High City.

Harris was traded to Seattle last year.  He was part of the deal that sent quarterback Russell Wilson to Denver.  Harris struggled in Seattle.  He was not the same player he was in Denver.  Harris totaled 2 sacks and 44 tackles.  In a cost-cutting move, Seattle let him go.  It saved the Seahawks $8.9 million in cap space.

With that, Harris is a free agent.  It is possible he could go back to Seattle.  Denver though makes more sense.  The Broncos need a defensive end.  Harris was missed last season.  Teams were able to run the football at will.  By the time the defense tackled the running back, it would be a 4 or 5-yard gain.   They rarely had tackles for losses.  Harris would fill that void.

The Broncos haven’t said if they are going to contact Harris.  The longer he is on the free agent market, the cheaper his price may be.  Denver should take a chance on him.  He might be the answer to improving the Broncos’ defensive line.  It would make a lot of sense for Denver to go after him.
