Jared Goff’s Play In Detroit Proves He Deserves A Long-Term Contract

By Jordan Long

The Detroit Lions had one of their best seasons in recent memory.  They finished the regular season at 12-5, winning the NFC North Division for the first time since 1993.  The Lions advanced to the NFC Championship game and blew a 17-point halftime lead to the San Francisco 49ers, ending their year.  Quarterback Jared Goff wants to stay in Detroit long-term.

Goff has been with the Lions since they traded for him on March 18th, 2021.  In his time with the Lions, Goff’s record as their starter is 24-23-1, passing for 12,258 yards, 78 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions.

This past year, Goff threw for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.  He won 12 games for the Lions one less than his career high which was with the Rams in 2018.  The Rams won 13 games that year.

In the postseason, Goff kept his high play up, passing for 837 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He didn’t turn the ball over.

In the NFC Championship game, Goff finished 25 of 41 passing for 273 yards and one touchdown.  His line protected him well and he was sacked twice.  It wasn’t his fault his team came up short.

Once the game was over, Goff knew he wanted to stay with the Lions.  He knows it is not up to him.  According to NBCsports.com, Goff said, “It’s not up to me. I love this place, and we’ll see what happens as time goes on here. But yeah, I love this place, and love Dan and all the coaches love and all my teammates. It’s out of my hands, it’s up to my representatives and obviously the people upstairs (in the front office).”

Goff’s current deal has one more year left. He is going to make $21.7 million next season.  The Lions don’t have to be quick to give him an extension. They could talk to him during the offseason or even early next year.  Of course, Goff may play on the last year of his contract.  The Lions though, need to keep Goff. He has proven how valuable he is to this franchise.
