The Major League Baseball Hall Of Fame ballot has two new players on it. They are Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman. Are these players worthy of the Baseball Hall Of Fame?
Ken Griffey Jr. spent 22 years in Major League Baseball. He played for three teams, the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, and the Chicago White Sox. During his career, Griffey hit .284 with 630 home runs and 1,836 RBI’s. His 630 home runs, ranks 6th on the all-time list. Griffey was voted an All-Star 13 times and has 10 Gold Gloves. He also took home NL Comeback Player of The Year in 2005 and was named MVP of the 1992 All-Star Game. Griffey was the king of the Home Run Derby winning 3 of them. He never won a World Series.
The only downside to Griffey’s career were injuries. The most games he played was in 1993 with 155. The lowest total occurred in 2010 appearing in 33 games. If he would have stayed healthy, he might be higher on the all-time home runs list. He deserves to be in the Baseball Hall Of Fame but the problem is that Griffey played in the steroid era. He never tested positive for steroids but there is always a question that he might have.
Trevor Hoffman spent his career with three different teams; the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Florida/Miami Marlins. Hoffman was unbelievable saving games with 601. That is second all-time to Mariano Rivera’s 652. Hoffman had a career ERA of 2.87. He was really tough to hit against because he would strike batters out with 1,133 strikeouts allowing his teams to win games at the end.
Hoffman never suited up in a World Series but his career stats tell his story. He was a 7 time All-Star and his number has been retired by the San Diego Padres. Hoffman should be in the Baseball Hall Of Fame because he was a reliable closer.
450 writers for the Baseball Hall Of Fame will be voting for who they think should be in. To get into the Hall, a player needs to be named on 75% of all the ballots. Those ballots will be turned in by December 21st. The induction at Cooperstown will take place on July 24th.
What do you think Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman’s chances are of getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame?
