St. Louis Rams Takes A Chance On Wes Welker

Earlier this week, the St. Louis Rams signed wide receiver Wes Welker. This comes after wide receiver Stedman Bailey was suspended four games on Monday for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

The St. Louis Rams worked out both Wes Welker and Hakeem Nicks. The Rams liked what they saw in Welker. According to ESPN, Head Coach Jeff Fisher said, “He’s in outstanding shape. We saw that early this morning. He’s anxious and eager to play. He’s moved the chains for two potential Hall of Fame quarterbacks, and he’s good at what he does. Whether he’s active this week, I can’t predict. I think he’ll be able to move some chains for us.”

This will be Welker’s fifth team. He played for the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and San Diego Chargers. Welker is one of the best slot receivers in the NFL who rarely drops the ball. In his 11 years in the NFL, he has 890 receptions for 9,822 yards and 50 touchdowns. Everywhere Welker has suited up, he has been a productive receiver. He will help the Rams if he stays on the field.

The problem with Wes Welker is that he takes too many hits which have led to concussions. According to ca.complex.com in 2013 he suffered two concussions in a span of three weeks. That forced him to miss the final six weeks of the season. Welker was able to appear in the playoffs and assisted the Broncos to capture the AFC Championship that year. Last season, Welker experienced yet another concussion during the third preseason game. Luckily, he didn’t miss much of the season.

The Rams are getting a player who is a reliable pass catcher. If he is healthy, Welker will be one the targets that Nick Folles should look for because he will gain yards. The downside is his concussion history. Welker can’t take big hits. Another big hit could end his career. The St. Louis Rams are taking a large risk having Welker on the field. Hopefully it works out for them.
