The Buffalo Bills lost to the Washington Redskins 35-25 on Sunday. Buffalo was down at one point, 28-3 early in the third quarter. They would outscore the Redskins 22 to 7 the rest of the game, but it still wasn’t enough. The loss eliminated the Bills from playoff contention and it will be the 16th year in a row missing the postseason.
One player who wasn’t happy with the effort was wide receiver Sammy Watkins. According to NFL.com, Watkins said, “Once we get to that point and realize that you could get fired the next day — and make it known. Hey, this is your job. If you’re not going to do your job, cut him. It needs to be a business. And I think once we get to that, we need some nasty coaches. If they’re not doing their job, get them out of here. If I’m not doing my job, step to me and get me out of here.”
Watkins is frustrated with how the season has gone to this point. The Bills have dropped 4 out of their last 5 games. In three of the 4 losses, it was only by one score. If the team would have made one more play, it could have been a different season.
Watkins is one of the Bills’ best receivers but he shouldn’t have called out his teammates. He feels the Bills didn’t give it their all yesterday. The Redskins made more plays and earned the win. It’s not just the players but the coaching staff. They were outcoached the whole game.
Watkins has to realize that the team wins and loses together. The last two games the whole roster should play like it’s their last. They have to prove to the coaching staff and the general manager that they deserve to stay on this team. A team, even with nothing to play for, should go out on the field and be the professional athletes they are. If they don’t , who knows if they will be back on the team or even the NFL next year.
How should the Bills approach the final two games?
