A Mile High Landing For Jim Harbaugh?

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos are going to start their coaching search soon.  One name they could be interested in is University of Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh.  Denver has reached out to him in hopes of interviewing him for their head coaching vacancy.

Harbaugh has been a coach in the NFL before with the San Francisco 49ers.  He was there from 2011 to 2014.  With the 49ers, he was very successful with a record of 44-19-1, a winning percentage of .695.  The 49ers earned a playoff spot in 3 of the 4 years, including a trip to Super Bowl 47.  The 49ers ended up losing to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31.  Harbaugh was let go following an 8-8 record in 2014.

In the college game, he coached Stanford and the University of Michigan.  He was at Stanford from 2007 to 2010.  Under him, Stanford was 29-21.  Stanford ended up in 2 bowl games going 1-1.  At the University of Michigan, Harbaugh is an impressive 74-25. Unfortunately, that success hasn’t translated into winning bowl games where he is a disappointing  1-6.

According to NBCsports.com, a source close to Harbaugh told TheAthletic.com, “I think it is a done deal if he gets an offer. “

Denver still needs to have his permission to interview him.  Reaching out is great but doesn’t guarantee Harbaugh will want to talk to Denver.  Harbaugh might want a second chance to coach at the NFL level and show his time in San Francisco wasn’t a fluke.

For Denver though Harbaugh could be a long shot.  Every coach desires a shot at coaching at the highest level, the NFL,  and only 32 of them exist.  Harbaugh must decide if he is offered the gig, would it be better than coaching the University of Michigan.  It seems like Michigan is the better job right now.  Harbaugh knows he can build a winning program at the University of Michigan. The track record shows that.  Denver is still trying to rebuild and become a winning franchise again.

Denver will also look to interview other candidates, taking their time to find the next Head Coach. Whoever the next coach is they have the challenge of turning the Broncos back into a winning team. Denver hasn’t made the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50.
