Andy Dalton’s Hall Of Fame Case

By Jordan Long

The Carolina Panthers start training camp on July 26th.  Their first regular season game is on September 10th when they face the Atlanta Falcons on the road. Panthers’ running back Miles Sanders believes backup quarterback Andy Dalton is a Hall Of Famer.

According to cbssports.com, Sanders said, “I have a good feeling about these guys. These guys work, and that’s the main thing I’ve noticed in OTAs. We got a very, very good young quarterback (2023 first overall draft pick Bryce Young) that’s being mentored by a very, very, very good quarterback, a future Hall of Famer, Andy Dalton, who I have a lot of respect for. And you got guys like Adam Thielen mentoring the young receivers, and that’s a great guy to take notes from. We got a seasoned O-line that I love—I love the film, I love watching their film. And the defense is stacked.”

Dalton has been in the NFL since 2011.  In that time, he has played for Cincinnati, Dallas, Chicago, and New Orleans.  This is his first season with the Panthers.  Dalton agreed to a 2-year, $10 million deal with the Panthers on March 14, 2023.   Dalton knows he most likely will be the backup to #1 overall pick Bryce Young.

Looking at Dalton’s overall numbers, he has passed for 38,150 yards, ranking 24th in NFL history.  The two players ranking just in front of him, Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana, are both in the Hall of Fame.  There is a case in terms of passing yards for Dalton to be in.

When it comes to passing touchdowns, Dalton has tossed for 244, 27th in NFL history.  Right there shows he is a borderline Hall of Famer.  244 isn’t bad but it’s not a number that sticks out.

Dalton is a career 83-77-2 starter.  In that time, he appeared in 4 playoff games with Cincinnati.  Those were all losses in the Wild Card Round. Dalton passed for 873 yards and 1 touchdown but threw 6 interceptions.  It is hard to call him a Hall of Famer due to his playoff performance.

His crowning achievement in the NFL was a Pro Bowl selection.  He was voted into the Pro Bowl 3 times.  In the end, Dalton is a borderline Hall of Famer.  His passing stats say he should be in but Dalton needs more touchdown passes.
