The Detroit Lions are in need of a veteran wide receiver. Calvin Johnson retired at the end of last season. Johnson was one of the top wide receivers in Lions’ history. Anquan Boldin visited Detroit on Monday. Would he be a good fit in this offense?
Boldin has played in the NFL for 13 seasons for three different teams, the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers. He was drafted by Arizona in 2003. His first season he became an elite receiver with 1,377 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. His best year with Arizona was in 2005 with 1,402 yards receiving. Boldin would reach the 1,000 yard mark five times with Arizona. In 2010 he signed with Baltimore. He didn’t go over 1,000 yards receiving, but was still a factor in helping the Baltimore Ravens win football games.
The last three seasons he spent with the San Francisco 49ers. 2013 and 2014 he had over a 1,000 yards receiving. Last season was one to forget. Boldin was still productive with 789 yards receiving but only caught 4 touchdowns and fumbled once. The 49ers decided not to renew his contract.
Boldin is familiar with Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell because Caldwell was the Ravens’ Quarterback’s Coach and interim Offensive Coordinator in 2012. Boldin would fit in with this offense.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford could look for him early and often. Boldin’s height at 6 foot 1 inch gives him an advantage. If Stafford throws the ball to him, he can out jump any defensive player to catch the football. His speed helps him separate from the defenders and he rarely drops a pass in the open field. The Lions should make a deal with him because he would contribute to a winning football team.
